Our challenging\, 5+ mile route with a 1500-foot vertical gain will take us up the White Dot Trail\, then the Cascade Trail\, and finally the Spellman Trail\, which is the steepest section of trail on the mountain. \nAlong the way\, we’ll share stories and discuss the history of Grand Monadnock\, scan the skies for migrating raptors\, take in the views\, and search for signs of the changing season. We don’t plan to summit\, but will instead enjoy views from lower ridges and promontories. This hike is only recommended for experienced hikers who are comfortable with steep\, rocky\, rugged terrain. \n9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (or later) in Jaffrey. Exact meeting location will be provided prior to the event. The Harris Center will reserve parking for all participants. Space is limited\, and registration is full. To add your name to the waitlist\, contact Miles Stahmann. \nFor general information about Harris Center field trips\, see our Outings Information page. (photo © Stuart Anthony via the Flickr Creative Commons) \n\nAbout Megan Graham\nMegan Graham is a graduate student at the University of New Hampshire\, where she is studying how we can use acoustic methods to monitor bat populations. Originally from Connecticut\, she graduated from the University of Connecticut in 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in natural resources and the environment. After graduation\, she worked with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection on many wildlife research projects\, but spent most of her time working with bats! She hopes to advance current conservation methods to protect these crucial species.

From bird migration and late-season flowers to mushrooms\, small mammals\, and the mighty acorn\, come discover how seasonal changes influence the flora and fauna of the Monadnock Region. Each class will consist of a short walkable outing led by an expert in the field (fungi-phile George Caughey will teach us about fall mushrooms\, ecologist Nate Marchessault will be our goldenrod guide\, and more!). You’ll also keep a personal almanac to track nature’s journey towards winter. Field trips will be supported by readings from Bernd Heinrich\, Peter Marchand\, and other writers and researchers. \nThis Environmental Studies Institute (ESI) course will meet on Tuesdays\, September 22 & 29\, and October 6 & 13\, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Harris Center and local field sites. Space is limited\, and registration is required. \nCost: $80 for Harris Center supporters / $100 for all others. Space is limited\, and registration is required. For all other information\, including questions about accessibility\, contact Susie. \n\nSusie Spikol (photo © Ben Conant) \nAbout Susie Spikol\nWriter and Harris Center teacher-naturalist Susie Spikol spends her autumn searching for signs of mammal activity. Her favorite thing to find is a bear nest high up in a beech tree. When she isn’t out searching for wild signs\, she is writing or leading programs for the Harris Center. Throughout her 30-year career as a naturalist and educator\, Susie has inspired thousands through hands-on programs and public talks\, earning numerous awards for her work. A regular contributor to Yankee\, Northern Woodlands\, and Taproot Magazine\, she also writes the “Backyard Nature” column for the Monadnock Ledger-Transcript. Her first book\, published in 2022\,  The Animal Adventurer’s Guide\, was recognized with a National Parenting Products Award. Her new book Forest Magic for Kids: How to Find for Fairies\, Make a Secret Fort\, and Cook Up an Elfin Picnic is filled with activities inspired by imagination\, folklore\, and science and an invitation to all readers to step outside and discover the beauty and magic of the world. Her newest book\, The Book of Wild Wonder\, will be hitting shelves in the spring of 2027.

SUMMARY:Saw-whet Owl Banding Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Small enough to sit in your hand\, saw-whet owls migrate through New England by the thousands each fall\, offering a unique opportunity for study. Join the Harris Center’s saw-whet banding team to learn what owl banding efforts are revealing about this pint-sized bird of prey\, and to see a demonstration of the banding process. If any owls are successfully caught\, we’ll have a chance to observe as they’re carefully weighed\, measured\, tagged\, and released back to the wild. Please note that these are wild animals\, so we cannot guarantee that owls will show up for this event. \n8 to 9:30 p.m. in Hancock. Exact meeting location will be provided prior to the event. Space is limited\, and registration is full — but you can still join the waitlist. In order to provide opportunities for the greatest number of people\, preference will be given to those who have not attended a Harris Center owl banding demonstration in the past two years. \nFor more information\, including questions about accessibility\, contact Brett Amy Thelen. \n\n \nOther Saw-whet Owl Banding Events\nTo meet demand for this popular event\, we’re also hosting saw-whet banding demonstrations on October 29\, November 4\, and one for families on November 5. \nLearn More\nWatch our video\, The Science of Saw-whet Owls\, for an in-depth look at our saw-whet owl banding program — or check out this two-minute reel to see the banding process in action. You can find other details about this project on our saw-whet owl banding page.

\n\n \nOther Saw-whet Owl Banding Events\nTo meet demand for this popular event\, we’re also hosting saw-whet banding demonstrations on October 14\, November 4\, and one for families on November 5. \nLearn More\nWatch our video\, The Science of Saw-whet Owls\, for an in-depth look at our saw-whet owl banding program — or check out this two-minute reel to see the banding process in action. You can find other details about this project on our saw-whet owl banding page.

SUMMARY:ESI Course: MicroExploring the SuperSanctuary — Mindful Meanders & Nature-based Practices
DESCRIPTION:Join Phil Brown and special guests for a series of autumn wanderings in tucked-away places close to home. Based on Phil and Ignacio Oreamuno’s new book\, MicroExploring the SuperSanctuary\, each exploration will feature a unique conservation property and natural history theme shaped by the conditions that present themselves that day. \nThrough MicroExploring — the practice of focusing attention and intention on a smaller geographic area — you’ll also learn practices to help you connect more deeply with the natural world. \nWhether scanning the skies for migrating raptors\, admiring the stunning autumn foliage from hilltop vistas\, or simply walking new or familiar paths\, you’ll come away with a renewed appreciation for the land and learn how to take MicroExploring with you wherever you go. \nPhil Brown and Ignacio Oreamuno leading a MicroExploring hike on Crotched Mountain’s accessible trails.
