SUMMARY:Environmental Studies Institute: Creativity in the Artdoors
DESCRIPTION:Join local environmental artist Sarah Wilson for this three-session class\, where we’ll make beautiful works of outdoor art using materials sourced from nature. Learn to see the natural world and all its shapes\, colors\, properties\, and patterns in a new way as you use its bounty to create your masterpiece — a relaxing\, peaceful\, mindful\, and fun way to spend time! Once your creations are complete\, you can enjoy them and then walk away to let them blend back into nature (…sometimes quite quickly if it’s a windy day!) You’ll learn basic techniques to create both flat and 3D designs\, as well as artwork that can dance in the wind. Attendees will work on their own and in small groups; perhaps we’ll even make one large group creation at the end. \nThis group meets Wednesdays\, September 27\, from 3 to 4 p.m.\, and October 4 & 11\, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Harris Center. \nCost: $80 for Harris Center supporters / $100 for all others. \nSpace is limited\, and registration is required. This new form of art has changed her life for the better. She loves sharing her skills and ever-evolving knowledge of the practice with others.

SUMMARY:Art Auction and Talks: Celebrating the Broad-winged Hawk on World Migratory Bird Day
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an art auction and evening of talks by Phil Brown (Harris Center Bird Conservation Director)\, Mike Akresh (Co-Director of Antioch University’s Institute for International Conservation)\, and Nate Irwin (artist\, Antioch Environmental Studies MS ’23\, founder of Illuminate Conservation) to celebrate World Migratory Bird Day! Meet the artist and presenters\, make your bid on artwork featuring the Broad-winged Hawk (valued at $4500) and the SuperSanctuary\, and enjoy refreshments. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Harris Center’s Broad-winged Hawk research project and the IIC. \nIIC will be selling a limited supply of Deans’ Beans and Cafe Solar sustainable fair-trade organic coffee\, proceeds which also go to the Student Raised Grant (SRG) for AUNE students who are conducting research or projects pertaining to ecology\, environmental education\, sustainable development\, natural resource management or conservation internationally. \n7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Harris Center. DESCRIPTION:This gallery exhibit is an ode to the incredible biodiversity present in our shared landscapes. Each photo represents not only an encounter with a stunning animal or wild place\, but an experience that may move audiences toward environmental understanding and responsibility. A first step in mitigating widespread biodiversity collapse is for us to meet the elusive and charismatic neighbors with whom we share the woods. The photography features wildlife from Sean’s two ecological home bases — Vermont and Wyoming — though most of the featured species occur in both regions. \nThis art show will exhibit from October 6 to November 1 in the Thelma Babbitt Room\, and is available to view during regular business hours. A portion of the proceeds from art sales will benefit the Harris Center. \nArtist Bio: Sean Beckett grew up with a camera in hand. Trained by his mother\, Sean learned at an early age that a camera can deliver the essence of our planet’s most powerful experiences. He is the Program Director at North Branch Nature Center\, where he works to connect people with wild places and faces of central Vermont and beyond.

SUMMARY:Last Day of Art Exhibit: Transitions
DESCRIPTION:Stephen Gehlbach is a mostly retired academic physician who recently relocated from Jaffrey to the RiverMead Retirement Community in Peterborough\, and whose photographs reflect a longtime passion for nature and the art of photography. He is also a juried member of the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen. The photographs in this exhibition – taken in nature –  center on the theme of transitions through the seasons\, employing color\, texture\, and form to explore the idea of change. \nThis art show will be on exhibit from September 14 to 30 in the Thelma Babbitt Room\, and is available to view during regular business hours. SUMMARY:Art Opening: Transitions — Photographs by Stephen Gehlbach
DESCRIPTION:Stephen Gehlbach is a mostly retired academic physician who recently relocated from Jaffrey to the RiverMead Retirement Community in Peterborough\, and whose photographs reflect a longtime passion for nature and the art of photography. He is also a juried member of the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen. The photographs in this exhibition – taken in nature –  center on the theme of transitions through the seasons\, employing color\, texture\, and form to explore the idea of change. \nThis art show will be on exhibit from September 14 to 30 in the Thelma Babbitt Room\, and is available to view during regular business hours. A portion of the proceeds from art sales will benefit the Harris Center. \nAn opening reception will be held on Wednesday\, September 14 from 5 to 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

DESCRIPTION:Painting “plein air” allows artists the opportunity to capture the emotional and sensory dimensions of a particular landscape at a particular moment in time\, bringing a spirit of spontaneity and truth to their art. Stop by anytime during this special event to wander along the Harris Center grounds\, observing painters and photographers from the New Hampshire Chapter of Women’s Caucus for Art (WCA/NH) at work. In addition to people painting\, actors from Project Shakespeare will be strolling around in their “Taming of the Shrew” costumes. \n10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Harris Center grounds. There will be an opportunity to purchase some of the “wet paint” works at the end of the day. DESCRIPTION:Nearly twenty years after her first show at the Harris Center\, contemporary wildlife artist Rosemary Conroy returns to once again celebrate the beauty and wonder of our local wild beings. It will be peak birding season\, which will complement the show’s focus on the favored feathered friends of Meade Cadot. A longtime mentee and long-ago student of his\, Rosemary is dedicating this show in Meade’s honor. \nInto the Wild will be on exhibit from May 4 to June 1 at the Harris Center\, and is available to view during regular business hours. An opening reception will be held on Friday\, May 6\, from 5 to 7 p.m. \nArtist Bio: Rosemary Conroy is a contemporary wildlife artist with a long connection to the Harris Center — having been an Antioch student who attended courses at the Harris Center\, a Wol’s Nest summer camp counselor\, a workshop leader\, and a two-term Board member. SUMMARY:Art Opening: Allegory in Light - Photographs by Laurie McGowan
DESCRIPTION:Trees communicate. They nurture and care for each other. Inspired by writer Peter Wohlleben (The Hidden Life of Trees) and daily wanderings through the woods\, Laurie McGowan captures this in her photographs\, celebrating trees and the interplay between nature and light. Falling shadows\, beams of light\, bark patterns — none of it escapes her eye. \nAllegory in Light will be on exhibit from April 1 to 29 at the Harris Center\, and is available to view during regular business hours. An opening reception will be held on Saturday\, April 2\, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. \nArtist Bio: Laurie McGowan is the director of the Conant Gallery at Lawrence Academy in Groton\, MA\, where she teaches photography. Unable to attend artist residencies she had planned for her sabbatical in Italy\, Portugal\, Costa Rica\, and Arizona when COVID-19 shut down travel\, she found herself looking for new subjects to photograph. In her own backyard\, she discovered the communication of trees. Laurie lives in Peterborough\, and exhibits throughout New England. She hopes her love of and connection to nature is resonant in these photographs.

SUMMARY:Abbott Thayer’s Monadnock: The Intersection of Natural History\, Artistic Research\, and World War
DESCRIPTION:The life and work of Abbott Thayer (1849-1921) — Dublin resident\, natural historian\, and a leading American artist in his day — present an interdisciplinary case study on the role of nature as a “medium” in the fullest sense of the word. Convinced that his perceptual skills as an artist led him to solve problems that scientists could not\, Thayer immersed himself in intense observation of Dublin’s woodlands and made revelations with far-reaching implications that landed on the desks of Churchill\, Roosevelt\, and Darwin’s colleague Wallace. Both his scientific illustrations and his landscapes of Monadnock — rarely taken together in analysis — are better reconciled when nature is understood as mediated by cognitive processes and broad cultural ideas\, rather than as “natural.” \nThis richly illustrated presentation by artist and art historian April Claggett will take a deep dive into the lessons that Thayer\, known around the world as the “inventor of camouflage\,” learned from the local landscape.
