DESCRIPTION:Contact Mary at (603) 525-3394 or by email to join the waitlist. \nThanks to the generosity of our supporters\, the new Eleanor Briggs Open Lodge is now hosting events large and small in a beautiful setting that connects people with the natural world. \nThe Lodge includes three adjacent accessible parking spaces and two accessible unisex restrooms with composting toilets for hikers and visitors. The building can accommodate up to 250 people and is designed to support a wide range of programs and gatherings\, including lectures\, summer camps\, musical and theatrical performances\, weddings\, memorial services\, and community events. The project also features new pathways\, an expanded deck\, and thoughtfully designed hardscaping and native plantings\, making it easier for visitors using walkers\, wheelchairs\, and strollers to enjoy the grounds. \nWe invite you to celebrate the official opening of this remarkable new space at a special open house and ice cream social. Enjoy a short presentation\, live music\, a scavenger hunt\, guided tours\, a gelato bar provided by Frisky Cow\, and other refreshments. To be premiered at Bartram’s Garden in Philadelphia in May 2026\, this project interweaves the voices of Grammy-award-winning Roomful of Teeth — an eight-voice “singing forest” — with science and storytelling\, transforming the unseen realities of the woodland into a musical conversation. With music by acclaimed composer Christopher Theofanidis\, libretto by poet Melissa Studdard\, and storytelling by Narragansett artist Tchin\, Root Song asks: What can trees teach us about how to live\, listen\, and be human at this pivotal moment? \nIn collaboration with Firelight Theatre Workshop\, Root Song will be brought from page to stage over four days at the Harris Center in early May. By engaging collaboratively with artists\, thinkers\, and community leaders from around the world\, the group seeks to uplift and amplify voices old and new while creating and performing meaningful and adventurous music. \nFounded in 2009 by Brad Wells and incubated at MASS MoCA in North Adams\, Massachusetts\, the ensemble developed its distinctive sound through intensive study with master singers from diverse traditions. Their experimental process challenges assumptions about vocal limits and continually redefines what the human voice can do. \nRoomful of Teeth has built a substantial and growing repertoire in collaboration with many of today’s leading composers and artists. As the artistic landscape evolves\, the group continues to explore new technologies and storytelling projects rooted in place\, home\, and community — approaching their work with curiosity\, rigor\, and gratitude. \n\nAbout Tchin\n​Tchin (pronounced ‘chin) is a nationally known\, multi-award winning artist. He was born in Norfolk\, Virginia and lived in rural Virginia and Rhode Island where he received his early schooling. He attended the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe\, New Mexico and graduated from Rhode Island School of Design. Tchin is an accomplished musician\, folklorist\, jeweler\, and teacher. He is the author of the children’s book Rabbit’s Wish for Snow and travels the country sharing Indigenous stories and music. \nHe’s produced four Native flute music albums\, played with the Public Orchestra\, Rehearsing Philadelphia\, and collaborated most recently with the Berklee School of Music’s Intersectional Soundbox Archive and the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society. Tchin jewelry has been featured in Vogue and won numerous first-place prizes at SWAIA Indian Market. Tchin currently teaches metalsmithing at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.  team \n\nAbout Christopher Theofanidis\n \nChristopher Theofanidis’ music has been performed by many of the world’s leading performing arts organizations\, from the London Symphony\, Chicago Symphony\, Philadelphia Orchestra\, and New York Philharmonic to the San Francisco Opera\, the Houston Grand Opera\, and the American Ballet Theatre. He is a two-time Grammy nominee for best composition\, and his Viola Concerto\, recorded with David Alan Miller and the Albany Symphony with Richard O’Neill soloist\, won the 2021 Grammy for Best Instrumental Solo. \nTheofanidis’ work\, Rainbow Body\, is one of the most performed works in recent decades\, having been performed by over 200 orchestras worldwide. Mr. Theofanidis is currently coordinator of the composition programs at Yale University and the Aspen Music Festival\, and has taught at the Juilliard School and the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University. \n\nAbout Melissa Studdard\n \nMelissa Studdard is the author of several books\, including the poetry collections Dear Selection Committee and I Ate the Cosmos for Breakfast. Her work has appeared in POETRY\, Kenyon Review\, Harvard Review\, The New York Times\, The Guardian\, and Best American Poetry\, among many others. \nAs a librettist and lyricist\, she has received commissions from institutions including the Aspen Music Festival\, Wolf Trap\, and the Yale Glee Club\, with performances by ensembles such as Roomful of Teeth\, The Washington Chorus\, and Ars Nova Singers. Her work has earned numerous national and international awards and has been adapted into film and other public art forms. \nStuddard is a past president of AWP’s Women’s Caucus and former executive producer and host of VIDA Voices & Views. She co-hosts the YouTube podcast Poems You Need and has held residencies at The Hermitage Artist Retreat\, Centrum\, Desert Rat\, and The Betsy-South Beach. \n\nAbout Jazimina Creamer-McNeil\n \nJazimina Creamer-MacNeil is a director\, creative producer\, singing actor\, educator\, and wild blueberry picker rooted in the beautiful and artistically fertile Monadnock region of New Hampshire. Her work focuses on how live performance can be a stitch in the great reweaving of humanity back into reciprocal kinship with the rest of life on this good\, green Earth. \nJazimina creates interdisciplinary projects at the intersection of music\, storytelling\, and nature\, including Danika the Rose and Love Like Water. She first connected with the Harris Center as an Antioch student\, later returning as a Wol’s Nest summer camp counselor\, workshop leader\, and two-term Board member. Before turning to art full-time\, Rosemary worked as communications director for the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests\, where she also co-hosted the New Hampshire Public Radio program Something Wild for 11 years. \nInspired by the mystery and beauty of wildlife\, Rosemary describes nature as her muse: “Notice the things you notice — that’s what you should paint\,” she says. After 9/11\, she left her “someday” dreams behind and embraced life as a professional artist. SUMMARY:Nature as Muse: An Afternoon with the Apple Hill String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Join the internationally acclaimed Apple Hill String Quartet for an afternoon of chamber music inspired by the natural world. Works by composers Franz Joseph Haydn and Antonin Dvorak feature winged melodies of lark and tanager\, while Meredith Monk’s Cliff Light\, Tendrils\, and Obsidian Chorale highlight unique textures in nature. As a special bonus\, the Quartet will also perform the world premiere of a piece by local composer Miriam Sharrock. Called “dashing and extraordinary” by The Strad Magazine\, the members of the Apple Hill String Quartet are the Artistic Directors and resident musicians at the Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music in Nelson\, winner of the CMAcclaim award from Chamber Music America. \n2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Colonial Theatre in Keene. DESCRIPTION:Join Harris Center staff\, trustees\, and friends for highlights from the past year\, notable recognitions\, and a special performance by writer Howard Mansfield and composer Ben Cosgrove. \nIn a selection from their acclaimed show\, A Journey to the White Mountains\, Mansfield and Cosgrove will explore how today’s visitors to the White Mountains and other wild places\, like the Monadnock Region\, come in search of an outdoor paradise. This concept\, popularized by 19th-century landscape painters\, created a demand for sublime scenery and set the stage for the establishment of national parks across the country. A Journey to the White Mountains was filmed by the Salt Project\, shown on New Hampshire and Vermont public television\, and has won a New England Emmy Award. \n2 to 4 p.m. at the Peterborough Players. For more information\, including questions about accessibility\, contact Amy Fackelmann. \nWriter Howard Mansfield sifts through the commonplace and the forgotten to discover stories that tell us about ourselves and our place in the world. He writes about history\, architecture\, and preservation. He is the author of thirteen books\, including In the Memory House\, The Bones of the Earth\, and Dwelling in Possibility: Searching for the Soul of Shelter\, which the Boston Globe called “a wholly original meditation … that’s part observation of the contemporary built environment\, part cultural history\, part philosophical account\, and at times something like a Whitmanian poetic survey.” His newest book is I Will Tell No War Stories: What Our Fathers Left Unsaid About World War II. \nComposer Ben Cosgrove writes landscape-inspired music – a spirited\, jazz-inflected piano in the tradition of Keith Jarrett. He has held artist residencies and fellowships with the National Park Service\, the National Forest Service\, Harvard University\, the Schmidt Ocean Institute\, the Appalachian Mountain Club\, and the Sitka Center for Art & Ecology. He has also written for Orion\, Taproot\, Northern Woodlands\, Appalachia\, and other publications. His fourth studio album\, The Trouble with Wilderness\, an evocation of nature and wildness within the built environment\, was released last year. With Franz Schubert’s tender song cycle Die Schöne Müllerin (“The Lovely Maid of the Mill”) as your guide\, we invite you to heighten your senses\, open your heart\, and walk in the woods in a new way. \nOn October 9\, 10\, and 11\, mezzo-soprano Jazimina MacNeil and violinist Marji Gere will give short talks exploring the ways Schubert and Wilhelm Müller weave the natural world into their music and poetry. Then\, you’ll head out on your own for a 1.8-mile walk through the woods\, with Schubert’s music — downloaded to your phone or tablet in advance — as your guide. \nSpace is limited\, and registration is required. Music download directions and exact location information will be provided upon registration. Please read our COVID-19 outing guidelines before registering to be sure this is the right program for you. \nRegister online here. This event is being offered six times from October 9 through 11 (at both noon and 3 p.m. each day)\, so if registration for a particular time slot is full\, please see our Events page for other dates and times. \nThe Singing Stream will remain a part of the Hiroshi Trail in perpetuity\, so if you are unable to come to the opening weekend\, don’t worry!
