DESCRIPTION:Join naturalists Wendy Ward\, Michael Nerrie\, and Nate Marchessault for a morning of birding along the Distant Hill Nature Trail\, a wheelchair- and stroller-accessible hard-packed gravel trail that winds through a rich hardwood-hemlock forest. Breeding birds will have just arrived and will be singing enthusiastically to defend territories and attract mates\, so we’ll let our ears and eyes guide us through the forest! \nBirding for All outings are designed for people of all abilities\, including those who experience accessibility challenges due to a disability or other health concern. SUMMARY:3rd Annual Bird ID\, Ecology & Habitat Management Workshop at Stone Fence Farm
DESCRIPTION:Join Phil Brown\, Matt Tarr\, and others for a morning of birding and learning at Stone Fence Farm\, a property owned and managed for a diversity of native species by professional foresters Jeremy Turner and Laura French. Through slow walking tours in a variety of habitats\, we’ll learn tips for identifying the birds we encounter by sight and sound; the ecology and habitat needs of those species; and how the forests\, fields\, and wetlands we see can be managed to enhance habitat for birds and other wildlife. In between walks\, we’ll take a break to enjoy wood-fired fruit pies (provided by Jeremy and Laura) and shade-grown Costa Rican coffee brewed by Ignacio Oreamuno of Troubardour Coffee. Bring binoculars and your favorite field guide to birds\, and come prepared for biting insects. Beginning birders welcome! \n5:30 to 10:45 a.m. at Stone Fence Farm in Unity. Rain date: June 9. SUMMARY:Environmental Studies Institute: Coffee with the Birds
DESCRIPTION:Join Phil Brown\, Harris Center Bird Conservation Director\, and Ignacio Oreamuno\, CEO of Troubardour Coffee and The Dreamcatchers\, for a series of winter wanderings in tucked-away places close to the Harris Center. Each exploration will focus on a different natural history theme related to the conditions that present themselves that day — whether following animal trails through a boulder field\, watching winter songbirds around the warmth of a bonfire\, seeking out the flowing water of a winter thaw\, or simply admiring the beauty and science of the winter woods. Through “micro-exploring” – the practice of focusing attention and intention on a smaller geographic area – and with the help of a little caffeine\, your senses will open to new experiences right in front of you. The course fee includes free Troubardour coffee with each session\, and a lesson in making coffee the Costa Rican way. \nThis group meets Sundays\, January 7 & 21\, February 4\, March 17\, and April 7 from 9 to 11 a.m. at field sites throughout the SuperSanctuary. \nCost: $80 for Harris Center supporters / $100 for all others \nSpace is limited\, and registration is required. For questions about registration\, please contact Audrey Dunn. \nFor general information about Harris Center field trips\, see our Outings Information page. This winter\, we need sharp eyes and ears to help collect data for the Christmas Bird Count and the Great Backyard Bird Count at the Harris Center. We’ll also venture to the coast to search for Snowy Owls and other winter birds on the shores of Plum Island. Outings will be led by Harris Center Bird Conservation Director Phil Brown\, conservation biologist Steven Lamonde\, and Harris Center naturalists Nikko Gagnon and Susie Spikol. Don’t miss this opportunity to grow your skills\, connect with other bird enthusiasts\, and contribute to community science. DESCRIPTION:Join Harris Center raptor biologists Levi Burford and Katrina Fenton as we tally all bird species observed during a single day from a single location: the Pack Monadnock Raptor Observatory in Peterborough. This global “Big Day” of birding both celebrates and highlights the needs of migratory birds\, and there’s no better place to enjoy the spectacle locally than at the Observatory. \nPast Big Sits at Pack have yielded a dozen or so raptor species\, as well as other fall migrants including warblers\, sparrows\, and waterfowl. Bring water\, snacks\, and binoculars (or borrow a pair from us)\, dress in layers\, and be prepared for summit conditions. Birding for All outings are designed for people of all abilities\, including those who experience accessibility challenges as a result of a disability or other health concern. DESCRIPTION:Nighthawks are among the last migrants to arrive each spring and the earliest to depart each “fall\,” with southbound migration peaking in late August. Join nighthawk enthusiasts Phil Brown and Susie Spikol to search for the spectacle from a good vantage point in the Contoocook River Valley. If it’s an average night\, we should get great looks at a handful of these acrobatic birds. If it’s better than average\, we just might see hundreds of nighthawks feeding in giant flocks. Bring binoculars (or borrow some from us)\, and come prepared for biting insects. \nBirding for All outings are designed for people of all abilities\, including those who experience accessibility challenges as a result of a disability or other health concern. Beginning birders and all ages welcome! \n6 to 7 p.m. at the Brenner Bridge in Peterborough. This site is wheelchair-accessible. Space is limited\, and registration is full. SUMMARY:Paddling for Loons at Willard Pond
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered what loons are saying with those eerie calls in the night\, or why loon chicks ride on their parents’ backs? Join Melanie Carolan of the Loon Preservation Committee and Harris Center ecologist Brett Amy Thelen to learn the answers to these questions and more! As a small group\, we’ll paddle with the Willard Pond loons\, learn to interpret their behaviors and vocalizations\, and discuss the work being done to help them — and all of New Hampshire’s loons — thrive. \nWe will be following best practices for ethical wildlife observation\, including maintaining a healthy distance from the loons\, so bring binoculars for the best viewing experience. In addition\, you will need to bring your own canoe or kayak and a PFD for each person in your boat. \n4 to 6 p.m. at Willard Pond in Antrim. DESCRIPTION:Join Phil Brown\, Matt Tarr\, and others for a morning of birding and learning at Stone Fence Farm\, a property owned and managed for a diversity of native species by professional foresters Jeremy Turner and Laura French. Through slow walking tours in a variety of field\, forest\, and wetland habitats\, we’ll learn tips for identifying the birds we encounter by sight and sound; the ecology and habitat needs of those species; and how the forests\, fields\, and wetlands we see can be managed to enhance habitat for birds and other wildlife. In between walks\, we’ll take a break to enjoy wood-fired fruit pies and shade-grown coffee. Beginning birders welcome! \n5:30 to 10:45 a.m. at Stone Fence Farm in Unity. Bring binoculars and your favorite field guide to birds\, and come prepared for biting insects. Cost: $35/person. Optional camping onsite and pizza dinner on Friday.
