DESCRIPTION:As a 3rd grade teacher at Chesterfield School\, Tina Ramsey has successfully developed a year-long study of local birds that helps her students build their science\, writing\, math\, and reading skills while also building their confidence and comfort in outdoor learning. DESCRIPTION:Join Symonds School teacher JJ Prior for this free Zoom talk about creating nature-based learning experiences for K–5 students. \nAs an experienced 5th grade teacher\, JJ decided to dream high and adopt ambitious projects such as tapping maple trees\, making maple syrup\, and raising trout in the classroom. JJ will share the small\, manageable steps he took to make these dream projects a reality\, the challenges he faced along the way\, and the impact these projects have had on his students. \nWe created the Teacher Talk series to shine a light on nature-based teaching in the Monadnock Region. This year the Harris Center will offer a series of three teacher talks: autumn\, winter\, and spring. Which animals prowl through your schoolyard at night? Where can you find evidence of wild mammals right outside your classroom? This workshop will inspire you to step outside and investigate the wild mammals just beyond your school doors. We’ll focus on how the Harris Center lays the groundwork to prepare students for focused\, productive outdoor mammal evidence exploration\, including mapmaking; simple class management tips for exploring forest\, field\, or schoolyard landscapes; supporting student-generated inquiry investigations; and recommended resources. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Harris Center. \nCost: $120 \nSpace is limited to 20 attendees\, and registration is required by November 22.
