SUMMARY:Monarch Butterfly Tagging
DESCRIPTION:Every fall\, monarch butterflies undertake a spectacular\, 3\,000-mile migration from New England to central Mexico. Contribute to the scientific understanding of this impressive annual migration during an afternoon of butterfly tagging with ecologists Steven Lamonde and Brett Amy Thelen. Together\, we’ll use butterfly nets to catch any monarchs we find\, then affix each one with a tag that displays a unique code before releasing them back to the wild. \nAfterward\, we’ll submit our data to Monarch Watch\, in the hope that these individual monarchs might be re-sighted on their overwintering grounds in Mexico or elsewhere along their migratory route. You’ll leave with a few tags to use on your own\, and a new appreciation for this most royal of insects. Bring a butterfly net if you have one (or use one of ours)\, and come prepared for sun\, tall grass\, ticks\, and other biting insects. No experience necessary! \n4 to 5:30 p.m. at Andorra Forest in Stoddard. Directions to the exact location will be provided prior to the event. Join a team of Harris Center naturalists at a local milkweed patch\, where we’ll count monarch eggs\, caterpillars\, and butterflies. If you enjoy treasure hunts and have a sharp eye\, this morning of community science is for you. \nChildren under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an interested family member. DESCRIPTION:The strength and resiliency of ecosystems depend on diversity. In nature\, sex and sexual behavior manifest in countless ways. Forget the talk of “male\,” “female\,” and gender essentialism. What actually exists? Cosexual trees\, gynandromorph butterflies\, mushrooms with 20\,000+ mating types\, and sex-changing species\, to name a few. Celebrate Keene Pride Week by joining Nik Katrick\, the director of The Nature Museum in Grafton\, Vermont\, as we talk about the sexual diversity that exists around the world\, and ask: Why isn’t this the norm in biology class? \n7 to 8 p.m. at NOVA Arts in Keene. When not at the museum\, they are an active volunteer with the Chase Hill Kindred\, Earthspirit Community\, and Marlboro Volunteer Fire Company. Hear how the abounding queerness found in the natural world challenges our expectations of what is normal\, beautiful\, and possible. As Robin Wall Kimmerer shares\, Kaishian’s “expansive view of life provides an antidote to the loneliness of our species.” \n4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Monadnock Conservancy in Keene. For more information about this particular event\, including questions about accessibility\, contact Susie Spikol. \n\nAbout Patricia Ononiwu Kaishian\nPatricia Ononiwu Kaishian is the author of Forest Euphoria: The Abounding Queerness of Nature (Spiegel & Grau) and the Curator of Mycology at the New York State Museum. She is also a teacher with experience ranging from outdoor nature education for children to college-level biology courses in maximum security prisons. Her research focuses on fungal taxonomy\, diversity\, evolution\, symbiosis\, and ecology\, particularly of the less studied fungal groups\, such as the insect-associated Laboulbeniales. \nPatricia is a co-founder of the International Congress of Armenian Mycologists\, which seeks to jointly protect Armenian sovereignty and biodiversity. She also studies the philosophy of science\, queer ecology\, and queer theory\, exploring how mycology and other scientific disciplines are situated in and informed by our sociopolitical landscape.
