SUMMARY:Butterflies Without Borders: Tracking the Monarch Migration
DESCRIPTION:Monarchs are one of the most iconic insects in North America — and the only North American butterfly that undertakes a long-distance\, multi-generational migration. Unfortunately\, this formerly abundant species has experienced dramatic population declines since the 1990s. To better understand and protect these beloved butterflies\, biologists are now tracking monarch migration routes with the use of tiny radio transmitters. Join NH Audubon biologist Lindsay Herlihy to explore some of the cutting-edge technologies used to track monarch movements\, and to discuss the data NH Audubon biologists are gathering. She’ll also share ways you can help support monarch conservation and research right here in the Granite State. \n7 to 8:15 p.m. via Zoom. To get the login details\, register here. Please save the confirmation email you receive from Zoom to access at the time of the event. Closed captioning will be available. For more information\, contact Brett Amy Thelen. \nNote: This event will be recorded. To ensure access to the recording\, please register for this event\, even if you cannot attend live. NH Audubon will follow up with all registered participants when the recording is ready to view. \nCo-sponsored by the Harris Center for Conservation Education and NH Audubon. \nMonarchs are the only North American butterfly species that migrates 3\,000 miles from Canada and the northern United States to Mexico — and back again — over the course of several generations. Researchers with the Motus Wildlife Tracking Network are now uncovering never-before-seen details of these epic migrations. (photo © Lindsay Herlihy)

SUMMARY:Monarch Butterfly Tagging
DESCRIPTION:Every fall\, monarch butterflies undertake a spectacular\, 3\,000-mile migration from New England to central Mexico. Contribute to the scientific understanding of this impressive annual migration during an afternoon of butterfly tagging with ecologists Steven Lamonde and Brett Amy Thelen. Together\, we’ll use butterfly nets to catch any monarchs we find\, then affix each one with a tag that displays a unique code before releasing them back to the wild. \nAfterward\, we’ll submit our data to Monarch Watch\, in the hope that these individual monarchs might be re-sighted on their overwintering grounds in Mexico or elsewhere along their migratory route. You’ll leave with a few tags to use on your own\, and a new appreciation for this most royal of insects. Bring a butterfly net if you have one (or use one of ours)\, and come prepared for sun\, tall grass\, ticks\, and other biting insects. No experience necessary! \n4 to 5:30 p.m. at Andorra Forest in Stoddard. Directions to the exact location will be provided prior to the event. Space is limited\, and registration is required. \nFor general information about Harris Center field trips\, see our Outings Information page. For more information about this particular event\, including questions about accessibility\, contact Brett. \nDuring this fun afternoon of community science\, we’ll use butterfly nets to catch any monarchs we can find\, then affix each one with a lightweight sticker that displays a unique code (pictured\, above) before releasing them back to the wild. photos © Ben Conant (humans) and Brett Amy Thelen (monarch)
