SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn: Vulture Conservation in Europe
DESCRIPTION:Join the Hawk Migration Association (HMA) for a special presentation with José Tavares and Alice Gama of the Vulture Conservation Foundation (VCF)\, an international organization dedicated to protecting Europe’s vultures through captive breeding\, reintroduction\, restocking\, and habitat protection. Their work includes the highly successful reintroduction of the Bearded Vulture in the Alps — a conservation project that now extends to Andalusia\, Corsica\, Grands Causses (France)\, Maestrazgo (Spain)\, and Bulgaria. Don’t miss this inspiring conservation success story! \nNoon to 1:30 p.m. via Zoom. Registration is required for this free online event. For more information about this program\, including accessibility\, contact Susie Spikol. For those not able to join via Zoom\, HMA will livestream the event on their Facebook page. A recording will also be posted to the HMA website following the presentation. \nCo-sponsored by the Harris Center for Conservation Education and the Hawk Migration Association. \n \nAbout José Tavares\nJosé Tavares is the VCF Director and has 30+ years of experience in implementing nature conservation solutions. At the VCF since February 2013\, José is working towards turning the VCF into a sustainable\, effective\, leading organization securing the protection of vultures and their habitats. This work involves not only on-the ground conservation projects and activities on vultures\, but also\, crucially\, organizational development and management. This includes the management of projects in multiple countries\, the development of complex partnerships and stakeholder building\, and problem-solving. \nAbout Alice Gama\nAlice Gama is the Financial and Administrative Manager at VCF. Between 2003 and 2006 she developed field work about raptor migration and breeding in Costa Rica and USA\, and the impact of power-lines on bird populations in Portugal. From 2007 to 2016\, she worked at a local environmental NGO\, in Northeast Portugal\, as a conservation manager\, overseeing raptor conservation projects\, including EU funded LIFE projects. At the VCF since 2016\, she is responsible for the financial management and supporting the organisation’s administration and bookkeeping. Even if focused on the administrative side of things\, working in vulture conservation at the VCF is truly inspiring and impactful\, especially as we focus a lot on creating cooperation initiatives with so many organizations across borders and continents.

SUMMARY:Reviving Artemis: The Making of a Huntress with Deborah Lee Luskin
DESCRIPTION:Join author Deborah Lee Luskin and Harris Center naturalist and writer Susie Spikol as they discuss Luskin’s newest book\, Reviving Artemis: The Making of a Huntress. This new memoir is the unlikely story of a woman raised in mid-twentieth-century suburbia who lived in New York City as a young adult and moved to Vermont in 1984. For more than thirty years\, she raised domestic livestock\, kept bees\, and cultivated fruits and vegetables while teaching literature and telling stories. But when she turned sixty\, something shifted. Luskin was overtaken by a primal urge to step out of the garden\, off the blazed trails\, and into untracked forest by learning to hunt deer. \nDeeply personal\, lyrically told\, and funny\, Reviving Artemis reveals Luskin’s ambivalence about guns and her fear of entering the forest alone in the dark. She persisted\, using her literary acumen to read the forest and\, as thoughtfully as she hunts for words\, to hunt for deer. With the stories of Artemis\, goddess of the hunt\, childbirth\, and wild nature to inspire her\, Luskin became a huntress\, determined to age fiercely and compelled to tell this story of finding her place in the natural world. \n5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Harris Center. Space is limited\, and registration is required. For more information\, including questions about accessibility\, contact Susie. \nCo-sponsored by the Harris Center for Conservation Education and the Toadstool Bookshop. \n\nAbout Deborah Lee Luskin\nDeborah moved from New York City to Vermont in 1984 to write\, keep bees\, and raise daughters. She has been an editorial columnist\, radio commentator\, pen-for-hire\, and blogger. Her first novel\, Into the Wilderness\, won the Independent Publishers Gold Medal for Regional Fiction. Luskin has also enjoyed a long career as an educator\, teaching writing and literature-based humanities classes to gifted elementary writers\, college students\, new adult readers\, life-long learners\, healthcare workers\, and prison inmates. She holds a PhD in English Literature and expected to become an academic\, not a deer hunter. She lives in Vermont with her husband\, their dog\, usually a cat\, and a variable number of chickens.

SUMMARY:The True and Lucky Life of a Turtle with Sy Montgomery & Matt Patterson
DESCRIPTION:Everyone loves turtles. And no wonder: long-lived\, unhurried\, and ancient\, these shelled reptiles are fascinating. Join Hancock’s own turtle team\, author Sy Montgomery and illustrator Matt Patterson\, for a special evening celebrating their newest picture book\, The True and Lucky Life of a Turtle — and to hear the inspiring real-life story of Fire Chief\, a giant snapping turtle who they both had a hand in rescuing. \nKirkus Review says\, “In the annals of true animal rescue tales\, this one delights and uplifts.” In their starred review\, Publisher’s Weekly writes\, “Montgomery and Patterson astonish with this fact-driven turtle tribute. Realistic\, almost photographic\, acrylic paintings capture diverse turtle species. Every page is an authoritative delight in this conservation-minded ode poised to turn anyone into a turtle lover.” \n7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Harris Center. Space is limited\, and registration is required. For more information\, including questions about accessibility\, contact Susie Spikol. \nCo-sponsored by the Harris Center for Conservation Education\, the Toadstool Bookshop\, and the Hancock Library. \n \n\nAbout Sy Montgomery\nResearching articles\, films\, and her 38 books for adults and children\, nationally bestselling author Sy Montgomery has been chased by an angry silverback gorilla in Rwanda\, hunted by a tiger in India\, and swum with piranhas\, electric eels and pink dolphins in the Amazon. Her work has taken her from the cloud forest of Papua New Guinea (for a book on tree kangaroos) to the Altai Mountains of the Gobi (for another on snow leopards.) For The Soul of an Octopus (a National Book Award finalist) she befriended octopuses at the New England aquarium and scuba dived and snorkeled with wild octopuses in Mexico and French Polynesia. For her national bestseller for adults\, Of Time and Turtles\, she befriended a 42-pound wild snapping turtle named Fire Chief\, who shows his extraordinary trust by allowing her to feed him by hand. She lives in New Hampshire with her husband\, the writer Howard Mansfield\, and their border collie Thurber. \n\nAbout Matt Patterson\nBorn in New Ipswich\, New Hampshire\, Matt Patterson has been bitten by snapping turtles and caught alligators with his bare hands from a kayak. He’s traveled to Central America\, and surveyed turtles in the rainforest of Belize. He’s camped in the Everglades and been all across the US visiting 48 states. He received a degree from the Art Institute of Boston in illustration. His vivid\, lifelike art has won national and international acclaim\, including the Golden Turtle Award and — twice — the Roger Tory Peterson Wild America Art Award. His work has hung in prestigious galleries\, museums\, and shows\, including the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum’s Birds in Art exhibition\, and he is a fellow at the Explorers Club in New York. Matt’s debut picture book\, The Book of Turtles\, was a Sibert Honor Book.

SUMMARY:Film Showing: The Invisible Mammal
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Bat Appreciation Month with this new feature-length documentary\, which follows an all-woman team of biologists as they set out to save bats from the ravages of white-nose syndrome. Directed by Bay Area filmmaker Kristin Tieche and produced by Matthew Podolsky (Sea of Shadows)\, The Invisible Mammal world-premiered at the 2025 DocLands Documentary Film Festival to a sold-out crowd\, where it won the Audience Choice Award. The film features Chief Scientist of Bat Conservation International Dr. Winifred Frick\, founder of NorCal Bats Corky Quirk\, and Dr. Alice Chung-MacCoubrey of the National Park Service\, offering a rare glimpse into the underground habitats of the little brown bat. Hopeful and science-driven\, The Invisible Mammal illuminates the connections between bat conservation and infectious disease — and will help you see these small-but-mighty mammals in a whole new light. \nFollowing the film\, Haley Andreozzi and Sandi Houghton of NH Bat Counts and Christina Kocer\, Regional White-Nose Syndrome Coordinator with the US Fish and Wildlife Service\, will be on hand for questions\, and to share what you can do to protect bats here in the Granite State. \n7 to 9 p.m. in the Putnam Theater at Keene State College. Registration is encouraged. For more information\, including questions about accessibility\, contact Brett Amy Thelen. \nCo-sponsored by the Harris Center for Conservation Education\, the KSC Film Society\, NH Fish and Game\, and UNH Extension.

SUMMARY:An Introduction to the New Hampshire Veterinary Center for Wildlife
DESCRIPTION:In recent decades\, increased human-wildlife interactions have led to a greater need for wildlife rehabilitation and veterinary care in New Hampshire and beyond. At the same time\, many NH-licensed wildlife rehabilitators have retired\, and on-the-job wildlife training for veterinarians is decreasing as veterinary colleges outsource student wildlife training to private practitioners. Join Dr. Michael Dutton and Helen Dutton to learn about their plans for a new New Hampshire Veterinary Center for Wildlife\, which aims to address these needs by providing a centralized site for veterinary care for injured wildlife in New Hampshire; on-site rehabilitation to minimize the stresses of transport; and training programs for wildlife rehabilitators\, veterinarians\, and veterinary students and staff. \n5:30 to 6:30 p.m. via Zoom. To get the login details\, register here. Please save the confirmation email you receive from Zoom to access at the time of the event. Closed captioning will be available. For more information\, contact Brett Amy Thelen. \nThis event will be recorded. To ensure access to the recording\, please register for this event\, even if you cannot attend live. We will follow up with all registered participants when the recording is ready to view. \n

SUMMARY:Return to the Sky: The Surprising Story of How One Woman and Seven Eaglets Helped Restore the Bald Eagle
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate raptors with author and wildlife biologist Tina Morris as she shares the remarkable story of her trailblazing work to bring the Bald Eagle back from near-extinction in the mid-1970s. \nIn the spring of 1975\, on the eve of the US Bicentennial\, Tina was selected to reintroduce Bald Eagles into New York State in the hope that the species could eventually repopulate eastern North America. Young and female in a male-dominated field\, Tina was handed an assignment to rehabilitate a population that had been devastated by the effects of DDT. The challenges were prodigious — there was no model to emulate for a bird of the eagle’s size\, for one — but Tina soon found that her own path to self-discovery and confidence-building was deeply connected with the survival of the species she was chosen to protect. \nForbes magazine calls Return to the Sky “inspiring …[and] proof that one determined person can still make a difference. At a time when the mass extinction of bird species is a critically important global topic\, Dr. Morris reminds us that humans can still be effective guardians of the natural world.” \n7 to 8 p.m. at the Harris Center. Space is limited\, and registration is required. For more information\, including questions about accessibility\, contact Susie Spikol. \nCo-sponsored by the Harris Center for Conservation Education\, the Toadstool Bookshop\, and the Hancock Library \n\nAbout Tina Morris\nRaised in a large family and surrounded by myriad orphaned creatures both domestic and wild\, Tina Morris was imbued with a lifelong love of animals. After a few wrong turns and a stormy relationship with science in college\, she found a way to make her life’s ambition—rescuing endangered birds of prey — into a reality. Tina earned her undergraduate degree from Oberlin College and her graduate degree in ornithology and wildlife biology from Cornell University\, where she helped develop the first techniques for releasing introduced Bald Eagles. Her field research ultimately became the instruction manual for eagle restoration programs in other eastern states. Tina was formally inducted as an honorary Iroquois into the Confederacy of Six Nations for her work returning the Bald Eagle to the nation’s skies. \n
