Laid out in 1773, Road Number One to Dublin — which actually leads to Harrisville — is the oldest documented road in Nelson, pre-dating the very existence of Harrisville by nearly a century. The road was officially closed in 1959, but it’s still open for hiking and quiet exploration — and is now bordered by hundreds of acres of Harris Center-conserved land.
Join Harris Center ecologist Brett Amy Thelen and Nelson historian Rick Church to discover the natural and cultural history of this hidden gem, including cellar holes, stately sugar maples, and one of Nelson’s finest vernal pools. Our out-and-back route will span 2.5 miles, with some rocky, uneven terrain and approximately 200 feet of elevation gain. Come prepared for sun and biting insects.
10 a.m. to noon in Nelson and Harrisville. Exact meeting location will be provided prior to the event. Space is limited, and registration is full. To join the waitlist, contact Miles Stahmann. For other information about this outing, including questions about accessibility, contact Brett.
