Environmental Studies Institute: Emerson and Thoreau

Friday, May 22, 2020,
1:00 pm
to 2:00 pm

  • This event has passed.

Emerson’s classic essay “Nature” helped kick off the American transcendental movement, and Thoreau’s essay “Walking,” written over the last years of his life, amounts to a personal manifesto. Short, sweet, and full of big ideas, these essays provide a lively introduction to two quintessentially American thinkers, the transcendentalism they inspired, and the distinctive place both “nature” and “wildness” hold in their respective philosophies of life. Join us as we explore these two American originals. Your “walking” through “nature” will never be the same!

Fridays, May 8, 15, and 22, from 1 to 2 p.m. via Zoom. This seminar will be led by Matthew Myer Boulton, former faculty of Harvard Divinity School, now a writer and filmmaker living in Keene.

Registration is required. Once you register, you will be given a Zoom link and a link to the readings. For more information or to register, please contact Susie Spikol by email.
