SUMMARY:ESI Course: MicroExploring the SuperSanctuary — Mindful Meanders & Nature-based Practices
DESCRIPTION:Join Phil Brown and special guests for a series of autumn wanderings in tucked-away places close to home. Based on Phil and Ignacio Oreamuno’s new book\, MicroExploring the SuperSanctuary\, each exploration will feature a unique conservation property and natural history theme shaped by the conditions that present themselves that day. \nThrough MicroExploring — the practice of focusing attention and intention on a smaller geographic area — you’ll also learn practices to help you connect more deeply with the natural world. \nWhether scanning the skies for migrating raptors\, admiring the stunning autumn foliage from hilltop vistas\, or simply walking new or familiar paths\, you’ll come away with a renewed appreciation for the land and learn how to take MicroExploring with you wherever you go. \nPhil Brown and Ignacio Oreamuno leading a MicroExploring hike on Crotched Mountain’s accessible trails. (photo © Ben Conant) \nThis group meets from 9 a.m. to noon every other Friday on October 2\, 16 & 30\, and November 13. Space is limited\, and registration is required. Outings will take place at local field sites throughout the SuperSanctuary. Directions to the exact meeting location will be provided prior to the event. \nCost: Drop-in registration is $30 for Harris Center supporters and $35 for all others. $120 for the entire series for Harris Center supporters (who have donated $50 or more in the past year) / $140 for all others \nFor general information about Harris Center field trips\, see our Outings Information page. For more information about this particular outing\, including questions about accessibility and drop-in sessions\, contact Phil. \nCo-sponsored by the Harris Center for Conservation Education and The Dreamcatchers. \n\nAbout Phil\nPhil Brown is the Harris Center’s Bird Conservation Director and co-author of MicroExploring the SuperSanctuary. In addition to connecting people to the natural world\, Phil’s other interests include managing conservation projects related to American Kestrel\, Broad-winged Hawk\, the Pack Monadnock Raptor Observatory\, and implementing sound stewardship across the region. He lives in Hancock with his family.

SUMMARY:Saw-whet Owl Banding Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Small enough to sit in your hand\, saw-whet owls migrate through New England by the thousands each fall\, offering a unique opportunity for study. Join the Harris Center’s saw-whet banding team to learn what owl banding efforts are revealing about this pint-sized bird of prey\, and to see a demonstration of the banding process. If any owls are successfully caught\, we’ll have a chance to observe as they’re carefully weighed\, measured\, tagged\, and released back to the wild. Please note that these are wild animals\, so we cannot guarantee that owls will show up for this event. \n8 to 9:30 p.m. in Hancock. Exact meeting location will be provided prior to the event. Space is limited\, and registration is full — but you can still join the waitlist. In order to provide opportunities for the greatest number of people\, preference will be given to those who have not attended a Harris Center owl banding demonstration in the past two years. \nFor more information\, including questions about accessibility\, contact Brett Amy Thelen. \n\n \nOther Saw-whet Owl Banding Events\nTo meet demand for this popular event\, we’re also hosting saw-whet banding demonstrations on October 14\, October 29\, and one for families on November 5. \nLearn More\nWatch our video\, The Science of Saw-whet Owls\, for an in-depth look at our saw-whet owl banding program — or check out this two-minute reel to see the banding process in action. You can find other details about this project on our saw-whet owl banding page.

SUMMARY:Book Talk: Invisible Monuments with Howard Mansfield
DESCRIPTION:Think of monuments as the first part of a call and response\, as in music\, as in worship. Any monument that we stand before asks something of us. We bring our sense of history to the present\, otherwise the granite/marble/limestone/bronze before us will be mute. \nJoin us for a special evening as Laura Knoy interviews Hancock author Howard Mansfield about his latest book\, Invisible Monuments: Tribute\, Memory\, and the Summoning of the Past. Hear the stories of forgotten\, invisible\, and erased monuments on our landscape\, including the site of a “desperate railroad riot\,” a rediscovered African Burial Ground\, and one family’s tribute to a son lost in war. \n7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Harris Center. Space is limited\, and registration is encouraged. For more information\, including questions about accessibility\, contact Susie Spikol. \n\nAbout Howard Mansfield\nHoward Mansfield sifts through the commonplace and the forgotten to discover stories that tell us about ourselves and our place in the world. He writes about history\, architecture\, and preservation\, very often set in the Monadnock Region. He is the author of a dozen books\, including The Bones of the Earth\, The Same Ax Twice\, Chasing Eden\, Dwelling in Possibility\, and In the Memory House\, which the New York Times called “a wise and beautiful book.” In his previous book\, I Will Tell No War Stories: What Our Fathers Left Unsaid About World War II\, he “breaks through the wall of silence some war veterans maintain\,” said Booklist. “The result is an impeccably researched and beautifully written . . . history of all that is left unsaid in the aftermath of war.” Mansfield has been honored by the New Hampshire Humanities Council as “a gem in our granite landscape” and by the Ruth & James Ewing Arts Awards. He has won a gold medal for Commentary for City and Regional Magazines\, a silver medal from the Independent Publisher Book Awards\, and was a City and Regional Magazine Feature Story Finalist. He received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Franklin Pierce University. \nHe has also served as a writer and consultant for museums\, written and performed a stage show\, A Journey to the White Mountains\, that was the subject of an Emmy Award-winning film\, and has co-written a forthcoming documentary. \n\n(photo © Allegra Boverman) \nAbout Laura Knoy\nLaura Knoy is one of New Hampshire’s most well-known journalists. She was the founding host of New Hampshire Public Radio’s “The Exchange” which for 25 years was the state’s most widely recognized and respected radio program. She has also worked at National Public Radio and other broadcast news outlets. \nIn mid-2021\, Laura stepped down from the host’s chair at NHPR to pursue other interests\, including writing fiction. Her skills in interviewing\, moderating\, narrating\, voice-overs\, and public speaking are frequently called upon. In 2022\, Laura joined the Rudman Center at UNH Franklin Pierce School of Law as its Director of Community Engagement. She’s the host of three podcasts\, including one focused on New Hampshire authors\, called ReadLocalNH. \n

SUMMARY:A Walk Back in Time: The Secrets of Cellar Holes
DESCRIPTION:Northern New England is full of reminders of past lives: stone walls\, old foundations\, a century-old lilac struggling to survive as the forest reclaims a once-sunny dooryard. What forces shaped the settlement and later abandonment of these places? Adair Mulligan explores the rich story to be discovered in what remains. See how one town has set out to create an inventory of its cellar holes\, piecing together the clues in the landscape. Such a project can help landowners know what to do if they have archaeological sites on their land and help stimulate interest in a town’s future through its past. \n5:30 to 6:30 p.m. via Zoom. To get the login details\, register here. Please save the confirmation email you receive from Zoom to access at the time of the event. Closed captioning will be available. For more information\, contact Susie Spikol. Note: This talk will not be recorded\, so we hope you can join us live! \nThis event is part of the New Hampshire Humanities “Humanities to Go” series. \n\nAbout Adair Mulligan\nFascinated by the natural and cultural history of northern New England\, Adair Mulligan is the author of The Gunstock Parish: A History of Gilford\, New Hampshire. She has also contributed to Proud to Live Here in the Connecticut River Valley; Where the Great River Rises: An Atlas of the Upper Connecticut River; and Beyond the Notches: Stories of Place in New Hampshire’s North Country. Formerly executive director of the Hanover Conservancy\, conservation director of the Connecticut River Joint Commissions\, and education director of NH Audubon\, she serves on the Orford Conservation Commission and board of directors of the Lyme Historians. She holds an MA from Smith College. \nStone walls and cellar holes hold clues to the past. (photo © Brett Amy Thelen) \n
