Moth lighting — the practice of placing a bright light next to a white sheet and observing what insects fly in — was once limited to entomology courses and research field trips, but has now become a favorite pastime for nature lovers, gardeners, and the naturally curious. Events like National Moth Week and Mothapalooza are attracting more and more attention — and now the Harris Center is bringing moth lighting to you!

Knowledgeable naturalists from The Caterpillar Lab will be on hand to set up sheets with special moth-attracting lights and to help identify the hundreds of species we expect to attract. Bring your curiosity, and prepare to be amazed by the diversity, size, and beauty of our local nocturnal insects. Wear long sleeves and pants, avoid bright clothing, and bring a flashlight and insect repellent. This program is designed for both adults and families with children age 10 and up.

9 to 11 p.m. in Hancock. Exact location will be provided upon registration. This event is now full. To be added to the waitlist, please contact Miles Stahmann by email.
