Join Distant Hill Gardens and Nature Trail co-founder Michael Nerrie and Harris Center teacher-naturalist Ben King to explore a special wetland habitat bubbling with frog and salamander eggs, and perhaps even a few fairy shrimp! Every spring, vernal pools — also known as wicked big puddles — fill up with rainwater and become specialized nurseries for amphibians. We’ll spend the afternoon searching for amphibian eggs and other critters in the beautiful vernal pools along the Distant Hill Nature Trail, an accessible trail with gentle slopes and a hard-packed gravel surface. Come dressed for the early May weather, and prepared for blackflies. A perfect way for families of all ages to make some wild discoveries.

2 to 4 p.m. at Distant Hill Gardens in Walpole. For general information about Harris Center field trips, including questions about accessibility, see our Outings Information page. For more information about this particular event or to be added to the waiting list, please contact Miles Stahmann.
