In May, Harris Center intern Maya Carey discovered that documenting vernal pools is fun — as long as you can outrun the black flies! You can see more photos from our vernal pool explorations on Flickr: we’ve got one album for photographic data from Harris Center lands, and another just for beauty. (photo © Brett Amy Thelen)

In 2025,  Harris Center interns, volunteers, and community partners documented 4 new vernal pools and identified 27 new potential vernal pools on conserved lands in Amherst and Stoddard, bringing our project total to 372 documented vernal pools in 20 towns in the greater Monadnock Region.

Many thanks to Maya Carey, John Harvey, Steve Lutz, Keith O’Donnell, Parker Root, Karen Seaver, and Grace Tood-Rogers for their springtime sleuthing!

Data for vernal pools on public lands have been shared with NH Fish and Game, the Southwest Region Planning Commission, and local land managers, and are available to the general public via our interactive online map.

Do spring-breeding amphibians pique your interest? Visit our Vernal Pool Project page for more information, then contact Brett Amy Thelen to volunteer.

Since 2013, we’ve documented 132 vernal pools — including this one — on Harris Center-conserved land alone. (photo © Michael Jacobson-Hardy)
