SUMMARY:Easygoing Hike at Distant Hill
DESCRIPTION:Explore Distant Hill’s quieter corners on this relaxed ramble with Harris Center ecologist Brett Amy Thelen and Distant Hill’s CEO (Chief Environmental Observer)\, Michael Nerrie. Our 2-mile route will feature stone sheep fences\, pollinator meadows\, a geology trail\, and a floating bog — along with whatever sights and sounds the September woods have to offer. Much of the hike will be along an accessible\, gently sloping\, hard-packed gravel trail; however\, some sections of trail will have rougher terrain. \n10 a.m. to noon at the Distant Hill Nature Trail in Alstead. SUMMARY:Clubmoss Workshop at Distant Hill Gardens
DESCRIPTION:A primitive group of plants\, clubmosses once towered above the dinosaurs. Though they now grow to only a few inches in height\, they are a common and intriguing component of our forests\, riparian areas\, and wetlands. Join naturalists Michael Nerrie and Nate Marchessault for an introduction to what clubmosses are (and what they aren’t) and a tutorial on identifying the handful of species that occur in our area. \nWe’ll begin with an identification workshop featuring collected specimens\, then head into the woods to observe these unique species in their natural habitat. SUMMARY:Vernal Pool Exploration for Families at Distant Hill Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Join Distant Hill Gardens and Nature Trail co-founder Michael Nerrie and Harris Center teacher-naturalist Ben King to explore a special wetland habitat bubbling with frog and salamander eggs\, and perhaps even a few fairy shrimp! Every spring\, vernal pools — also known as wicked big puddles — fill up with rainwater and become specialized nurseries for amphibians. We’ll spend the afternoon searching for amphibian eggs and other critters in the beautiful vernal pools along the Distant Hill Nature Trail\, an accessible trail with gentle slopes and a hard-packed gravel surface. Come dressed for the early May weather\, and prepared for blackflies. A perfect way for families of all ages to make some wild discoveries. \n2 to 4 p.m. at Distant Hill Gardens in Walpole.
