SUMMARY:ESI Course: Getting to Know the Goldenrods
DESCRIPTION:Goldenrods\, with their beautiful late-season blooms\, gently usher us out of the growing season and into the senescence of autumn. Join ecologist Nate Marchessault for an exploration of these diverse but approachable native plants. Through a mix of indoor lectures and outdoor field experiences\, we’ll learn to identify the species that occur locally — and gain a new appreciation for these late-summer beauties. Day One will start with an indoor presentation\, followed by some time practicing our new identification skills on the Harris Center grounds. Day Two will be spent in the field. \nThis Environmental Studies Institute (ESI) course will meet on Thursdays\, August 28 and September 11\, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Harris Center and local field sites. (Note: the second class was originally scheduled for September 4\, but has been changed to September 11 due to a scheduling conflict.) \nCost: $40 for Harris Center supporters / $60 for all others. Space is limited\, and registration is required. For questions about registration\, contact Miles Stahmann. For all other information\, including questions about accessibility\, contact Nate. \n\n \nAbout Nate Marchessault\nNate grew up in southeastern Massachusetts\, where he dip-netted in local marshes and fished along the beaches. After his undergraduate studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst\, he caught the birding bug\, which cemented his passion for nature and desire to work in the environmental field. \nIn addition to his work as an ecologist with the Harris Center\, Nate is a graduate student at Antioch University\, with a focus on Conservation Biology. He is also a rare plant surveyor for the Native Plant Trust\, and is on the Board of Directors of the birding journal\, Bird Observer. \nNate makes a conscious effort not to take for granted the everyday happenings in the natural world\, and appreciates the mountainous backdrop of the area and a good sunrise or sunset. In his free time\, he can be found kayaking around boggy areas looking for plants\, birding the most obscure locations possible\, or sitting by a random brook\, appreciating the moment.

SUMMARY:ESI Course: Entomology for Everyone
DESCRIPTION:Join Harris Center naturalist and entomologist Jenna Spear for an overview of the fascinating and diverse world of insects. We’ll explore basic insect biology\, as well as the natural history and ecological significance of some commonly found species. Time will be spent both inside\, learning through slides and the Harris Center’s pinned bug collection\, and outside\, exploring different tools and techniques for insect observation. No experience necessary. Expand your horizons this summer and get into insects! \nThis Environmental Studies Institute (ESI) course will meet at the Harris Center on Mondays\, June 16\, 23\, and 30 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. $85 for Harris Center supporters / $125 for all others. Space is limited\, and registration is required. For questions about registration\, contact Miles Stahmann. For all other information\, including questions about accessibility\, contact Susie Spikol. \n \nAbout Jenna Spear\nJenna grew up in the bustling San Francisco Bay Area and then migrated east\, discovering a love for the outdoors along the way. After spending time in Mexico studying marine biology\, a career in lab science didn’t seem so interesting\, so Jenna changed paths to study forest insects. For over 20 years\, she’s taught about insects and the natural world to a variety of ages — as an instructor at Keene State College and Antioch University New England\, at summer camps\, in the Keene elementary schools\, and now with the Harris Center. She lives in Keene with her husband\, Sean\, and various furry family members.

SUMMARY:ESI Course: Lichens of New England
DESCRIPTION:Join Kay Hurley\, author of Lichenpedia\, for a day devoted to the fascinating world of these composite organisms. Learn about the lichen life cycle\, their role in the ecosystem\, and how to identify the different groups of these common\, but often overlooked\, symbiotic communal beings. We’ll start indoors\, then head outside to explore the Harris Center grounds\, practice our skills\, and document nearby lichen diversity. This class is suited for people with all levels of lichen knowledge\, from beginners to experienced lichen lookers. \nThis Environmental Studies Institute (ESI) course will meet on Saturday\, April 26\, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Harris Center. \nCost: $40 for Harris Center supporters / $60 for all others. Space is limited\, and registration is now full\, but you can join the waitlist here. For questions about registration\, contact Miles Stahmann. For all other information\, including questions about accessibility\, contact Susie Spikol. \nKay Hurley is an avid naturalist who has studied lichens for 20 years. Her new book\, Lichenpedia\, is a collection of lichen stories. Kay has worked on the lichen team of many BioBlitzes\, though her interests also extend to animalcules\, soil microbes\, and diatoms: tiny things\, the underdogs\, and the overlooked. \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:NH Bat Counts Volunteer Training
DESCRIPTION:Got bats? Help us count them! Attics\, barns\, and church steeples often serve as summer homes for female bats and their young. In the face of white-nose syndrome\, which is causing significant declines in bat populations throughout the Northeast\, monitoring these “maternity colonies” is more important than ever. Landowners\, homeowners\, and other volunteers can help keep track of New Hampshire’s bats by conducting “emergence counts” at bat roosts throughout the state through the NH Bat Counts project. \nJoin wildlife biologists Sandi Houghton of NH Fish & Game and Haley Andreozzi of UNH Cooperative Extension to learn more about the bat species found in New Hampshire\, the threats they face\, and how you can help. We’ll start indoors with a presentation about New Hampshire bats\, then caravan to a nearby barn for an outdoor bat counting demonstration. The second half of the training will be held outside at twilight. Bring a clipboard and pencil to collect data and a flashlight or headlamp for visibility when walking back to your car\, and come prepared for bugs (especially mosquitoes). \nAll are welcome\, but landowners and homeowners with bats on their property are especially encouraged to attend. We’ll also have a list of sites in need of volunteers\, for those who do not have their own bats\, but are interested in contributing to the NH Bat Counts project. \n7 to 9 p.m. at the Harris Center and a nearby field site. Space is limited\, and registration is required. Due to space limitations at the counting site\, only the first 25 individuals to register will be able to participate in the bat counting demonstration. We have now reached capacity for the outdoor demo portion of the program. All who register from this point on will be registered for the indoor presentation only. \nFor more information\, including questions about accessibility\, contact Haley. \nCo-sponsored by the Harris Center for Conservation Education\, UNH Cooperative Extension\, and NH Fish and Game.

SUMMARY:Environmental Studies Institute: The Wild Flavors of August — Foraging with Fox Paw School
DESCRIPTION:Join Jonathan Shapiro and Lucian Avery of Fox Paw School for a weekend of using our senses to explore our surroundings\, ground ourselves in place\, and discover August’s wild flavors. This class will offer a thorough introduction to eating wild plants from our local watershed — we’ll cover everything from field botany and plant identification to sustainable foraging\, harvesting techniques\, and food preparation. Most of our time will be spent in the field\, with some short classroom segments. \nThis group meets Saturday\, August 19 & Sunday\, August 20\, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Harris Center and local field sites. \nCost: $120 for Harris Center and Cornucopia Project supporters / $140 for all others. \nSpace is limited\, and registration is required. For questions about registration\, contact Audrey Dunn. For general information about Harris Center field trips\, including questions about accessibility\, see our Outings Information page. For questions about this particular outing\, contact Susie Spikol. \nCo-sponsored by the Harris Center for Conservation Education and The Cornucopia Project. \nJonathan Shapiro believes that a deep and accurate understanding of the more-than-human world is necessary for us to be healthy\, both as a culture and as individuals. The Fox Paw School is his small step toward reconnecting himself and others with the rest of our wild kin. When he’s not teaching\, you’ll find him poking around beaver wetlands\, watching the clouds\, and listening to birds. His other interests include hunting\, fishing\, running\, reading books by the woodstove\, and making crafts. \nLucian Avery is a father\, a blacksmith\, and a backyard wanderer. He lives in Hardwick\, Vermont\, where he spends much of his time getting to know his wild neighbors. He walks the hills\, watching birds\, listening to frogs\, feeling the wind\, and tasting the weeds. Lately he has gotten caught up in cloud drama as they evolve through the day. He also likes to make things for everyday life\, like baskets\, bowls\, and chicken soup.
