The more-than-400,000,000-year-old geologic history of the Monadnock Region is illustrated by a variety of bedrock and surficial geologic features in the landscape surrounding the Harris Center. Join Dr. Frederick Rogers to learn about minerals, rocks, plate tectonics, geologic time, the forces that shape landscapes, and what these things can tell us about the history of our region. Our first three sessions will be in the classroom, followed by a final session in the field.

This class takes place on Thursdays, September 23 & 30 and October 7 & 14, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Harris Center & local field sites.

Instructor: Dr. Frederick Rogers is Professor of Geology and Environmental Sciences at Franklin Pierce University in Rindge. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in geology from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, and his doctoral degree in geology from the University of Iowa-Iowa City. Within the broad field of geology, his areas of particular interest and research are invertebrate paleontology, micropaleontology, biostratigraphy, and lithostratigraphy, with a focus on Devonian–age brachiopods and conodonts. In addition, he has a longstanding interest in all aspects of evolution, broadly defined – cosmic, geological, and biological – and in the history and philosophy of science.
