Bring your naturalist’s eye for detail to this four-week poetry course with Henry Walters, in which the act of writing becomes itself a form of observation. Taking our cue from an anthology of poems that have grown out of intimate study of the natural world, we’ll look for fox tracks inside Ted Hughes’ poem “The Fox,” keep company with garden spiders in Whitman’s “Noiseless Patient Spider,” and catch fish on Elizabeth Bishop’s imaginary hook. In this course, we’ll workshop participants’ writing and analyze that of our anthologized “specimens.” We’ll also ask how the craft of writing can heighten our senses and our appreciation of the flora, fauna, and landscapes of New Hampshire.

Dates: This Environmental Studies Institute class meets on Wednesdays, April 25, May 2, 9 and 16, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Harris Center.

Cost: $60 for Harris Center members / $80 for non-members

Instructor: Henry Walters is a poet, essayist, naturalist, and currently writer-in-residence at the Dublin School. His first book of poems, Field Guide A Tempo, was a finalist for the 2016 Kate Tufts Discovery Award.

Space is limited and registration is required. For more information or to register, please contact Sara LeFebvre at (603) 525-3394 or by email.
