Solar Panels

In 2018, a grid of 30 solar panels was installed on the Harris Center’s southeast-facing roofs. Collectively, this system was expected to produce approximately 8,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually – about half of the energy required to keep our building running.

Then in 2024, the Harris Center moved to 100% solar electricity by adding two solar ground mounts in a sunny patch behind our building.

These state-of-the-art panels are bifacial, meaning they can absorb energy from the sky and from the ground (ideal for snowy winters!). The panels are also adjustable and can be angled to maximize sunlight exposure throughout the seasons.

The new system — which was designed and installed by South Pack Solar, a longtime Harris Center Business Partner — is expected to produce 10,000 kWh of electricity annually. When combined with the roof-mounted panels, this should cover our electricity use now and for a long time to come.

This photovoltaic project is a huge step towards reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, and was made possible by a generous bequest from a Harris Center supporter. We are deeply grateful to her – and to all who have included the Harris Center in their estate planning.
