Releasing and pruning wild apple trees can keep them healthy and increase fruit production for a wide variety of wildlife. Join Nigel Manley, the Forest Society’s Senior Outeach Manager at The Rocks, for a hands-on introduction to the basics of pruning wild apple trees.

With more than 30 years of experience, Nigel will demystify the pruning process — from how to make a proper cut to how much to remove and, most importantly, where to begin. This workshop is designed to build confidence for beginning pruners, with an emphasis on safety and practical skills. Pruning tools will be provided for participants to try.

The morning will be spent indoors in the classroom, followed by a lunch break and an afternoon outdoors applying what you’ve learned in the Harris Center’s old orchard. Warm layers, gloves, winter footwear, and boot traction are strongly recommended.

10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Harris Center. Space is limited, and registration is required.

Cost: $5 for Forest Society members and Harris Center supporters, $20 for those who are not-yet members, and free for volunteer land stewards. Registration closes March 9, or when all spaces have been filled. For more information about this workshop, including questions about accessibility, contact Susie Spikol.

Co-sponsored by the Harris Center for Conservation Education and the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests.
