Saw-whet Banding Field Reports

Bringing Saw-whet Secrets to Light

In the fall of 2022, we successfully piloted our first year of saw-whet banding. Staff and volunteers dedicated hundreds of hours of their time to the project — from taking turns sitting quietly in the dark woods, waiting for the sound of a tiny owl flying into a mist net, to taking measurements and banding the birds, to connecting with the public about the importance of banding efforts for conservation purposes. In 2023, we launched our second successful season, refining our methods, banding more owls, and offering more opportunities for people to connect with this special bird of prey. Click on either report to read a full account of the season, and stay tuned for reports from future seasons.
