The Broad-winged Hawk is the most common raptor in New Hampshire, but only in summer. In September, all of “our” hawks leave for the tropics, wintering from Guatemala south to northern Bolivia. But where, exactly? To help answer this question, the Harris Center is partnering with Hawk Mountain Sanctuary to tag one or more Broad-winged Hawks with satellite transmitters that will track their journey. The first step is finding their nests, and we need your help to make it happen!

Join Eric Masterson and Brett Amy Thelen for an indoor introduction to this exciting new project, and to join our team of citizen science hawk sleuths. We’ll review Broad-winged Hawk ecology and migration, go over the goals and methods of the tracking project, offer tips for scouting out hawk nests, then sign up to search specific Harris Center lands for nesting hawks throughout the month of April. Beginning birders welcome!

This training will now be via Zoom. To sign up, please contact Eric by email.

Co-sponsored by the Harris Center for Conservation Education and Hawk Mountain Sanctuary.
