In 2016, the Harris Center installed six study plots in the woods near our building as part of SPARCnet, a collaborative research effort aimed at understanding the effects of climate change on woodland salamanders. Each plot consists of 50 small wooden “coverboards” that appeal to forest amphibians – especially redbacked salamanders (Plethodon cinereus) – as sources of shelter.

To participate in this exciting new conservation research initiative, join Brett Amy Thelen for an afternoon of monitoring our SPARCnet plots. We’ll start at the Harris Center with a brief introduction to redbacked salamander ecology and to our study methods, then head into the woods to survey for salamanders. No experience necessary! 3 to 5 p.m. at the Harris Center. For more information or to RSVP, please contact Brett at (603) 358-2065 or by email.
