Have you ever wondered what loons are saying with those eerie calls in the night, or why loon chicks ride on their parents’ backs? Join Caroline Hughes of the Loon Preservation Committee and Harris Center ecologist Brett Amy Thelen to learn the answers to these questions and more! As a small group, we’ll paddle with the Lake Skatutakee loons, learn to interpret their behaviors and vocalizations, and discuss the work being done to help them — and all of New Hampshire’s loons — thrive.

We will be following best practices for ethical wildlife observation, including maintaining a healthy distance from the loons, so bring binoculars for the best viewing experience. You’ll also need to bring your own canoe, kayak, or paddleboard, and a PFD for each person in your party.

4 to 6 p.m. at Lake Skatutakee in Harrisville. Exact meeting location will be provided upon registration. Space is limited, and registration is required.

For general information about Harris Center field trips, see our Outings Information page. For more information about this particular outing, including questions about accessibility, contact Brett.

Co-sponsored by the Harris Center for Conservation Education and the Loon Preservation Committee.
