Scholarships Awarded to Rising Environmental Leaders

The Harris Center is proud to present our 2024 Environmental Leadership Awards to two graduating high school seniors who have a demonstrated passion for the natural world, a strong commitment to the environment, and the capacity to create positive change in their community and beyond — Elizabeth “Liza” Petrov (left) of ConVal High School and Madison Bellofatto (right) of Conant High School. Each award comes with a $2,500 scholarship, made possible through the generosity of an anonymous donor who believes in the power of young people to create positive environmental change.

Liza Petrov plans to major in Civil Engineering and minor in Architectural Studies at the University of New Hampshire.

Liza Petrov (she/her) plans to attend the University of New Hampshire as a Hamel Scholar, where she will major in Civil Engineering and minor in Architectural Studies. Liza credits the Peterborough Renewable Energy Project (PREP)’s initiative to convert the town’s aging buildings to all-electric heating and cooling as having a major impact on her, and hopes to continue supporting PREP in any way she can. She also already has her sights set on earning a master’s degree in Architectural Engineering from Northeastern University after her time at UNH. She says, “I believe that the future of building design will require architecture and civil engineering to more closely intersect, as more buildings will be designed with sustainability and green-building technology in mind.”

Madison Bellofatto (she/her) is headed to Saint Anselm College, where she’ll major in Environmental Science. In the future, she aspires to create environmental policies that benefit both ecosystems and individual species. She’s already off to a great start. She says, “I’ve learned how to reduce my carbon footprint, and I’ve learned how to make policies regarding global climate change.”

The Harris Center is delighted to help these enterprising young leaders pursue their dreams. Congrats to Liza and Madison!
