Nestled at the base of Mount Skatutakee’s north side, Jack’s Pond is one of Hancock’s hidden gems. The pond is named after Jack, a once-enslaved African who gained his freedom and lived nearby in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Join Hancock writer Eric Aldrich and Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire Director JerriAnne Boggis for a 2.5-mile roundtrip hike to Jack’s Pond, where we’ll hear about Jack’s life, the families he was connected with, and how Black history — so long in the shadows — is now coming to light.

10 a.m. to noon at the Harris Center. Space is limited, and registration is full.

For general information about Harris Center field trips, see our Outings Information page. For questions about this particular outing, including questions about accessibility, contact Eric.

Co-sponsored by the Harris Center for Conservation Education and the Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire.
